The top-ranked national university in the country is the University of Tokyo, the top public university is Osaka Public University, and the top private university is Aoyama Gakuin University. JS Corporation, which operates the Japanese University Information website, conducted a survey of 183,590 high school students about their interests in universities. The rankings, compiled as of September 30, 2023, were categorized into national and prefectural versions and published on the website. The survey period was from April 2021 to September 2023.
In the national popularity rankings of universities in Japan, the top-ranked public national university is the University of Tokyo, followed by Tsukuba University in second place, Kyoto University in third place, Osaka University in fourth place, and Nagoya University in fifth place. The composition of the top 30 remained unchanged from the rankings in August, but Kyushu University, previously ranked 7th, and Kobe University, previously ranked 8th, switched places, with Kobe University now in 7th place and Kyushu University in 8th place.
The rankings for public universities are as follows: 1st place is Osaka Public University, 2nd place is Tokyo Metropolitan University, 3rd place is Shizuoka Prefectural University, 4th place is Nagoya City University, and 5th place is Kitakyushu City University. Below the 8th place in the rankings for public universities, there were significant changes. Fukuoka Prefectural University, which was ranked 8th last year, and Hyogo Prefectural University, which was ranked 9th last year, swapped positions, with Iwate Prefectural University, which was ranked 12th last year, rising to 9th place. The universities that were tied for 9th place in the previous rankings, Miyagi University and Akita International University, both fell to 11th place.
Private university rankings are as follows: 1st place is Aoyama Gakuin University, 2nd place is Keio University, 3rd place is Kinki University, 4th place is Meiji University, and 5th place is Waseda University. The top 30 private universities remain unchanged, but there have been changes in the rankings for Kokugakuin University, which was ranked 27th last year, and Teikyo Heisei University, which was ranked 28th last year.
In the popularity rankings by prefecture: In Tokyo, the top-ranked national and public universities are the University of Tokyo in 1st place, Hitotsubashi University in 2nd place, and Yokohama National University in 3rd place. The top private universities are Aoyama Gakuin University in 1st place, Meiji University in 2nd place, and Keio University in 3rd place.
