Hiroshima University, with its roots dating back to the establishment of Hiroshima Higher Normal School in 1902 and Hiroshima College of Arts and Sciences in 1929, evolved through mergers with various institutions. In 1949, it established faculties in literature, education, politics and economics, science, engineering, and animal husbandry. The School of Medicine was founded in 1953, followed by the School of Dentistry in 1965 and the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences in 1974. In 2006, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was added.
