Population Statistics of Mainland Chinese in Japan's Prefectures


According to Japanese government statistics, as of June 2024 (Reiwa 6), there were 3,588,956 legally registered mid-to-long-term foreign residents in Japan. Among them, 911,464 were Chinese (844,187 from Mainland China and 67,277 from Taiwan), accounting for 25.39%. This means that one out of every four foreign residents in Japan is Chinese, a significant proportion.

So, where are these Chinese residents distributed across Japan? The population statistics of Mainland Chinese in Japan's prefectures are as follows:

Tokyo has the highest number of Chinese residents by a significant margin, followed by Saitama, Osaka, Kanagawa, and Chiba prefectures. The bottom three are Kochi, Miyazaki, and Tottori prefectures, indicating that prefectures less popular among Japanese residents are also less appealing to Chinese residents.
