From beaches in Tokyo where you can enjoy sea bathing, to the Shonan area, renowned as a haven for beachgoers, and the sandy shores around Fujisawa, these are all excellent places to unwind.
We will introduce you to recommended beaches in the Kanto region that can be reached within one hour by train or bus from central Tokyo and are accessible on foot from the nearest station.
1. Kasai Seaside Park (Tokyo)
The artificial coast “Nishi-nagisa” at Kasai Seaside Park is generally closed for swimming, but in recent years, from mid-July to late August, a special “sea bathing experience” is opened, allowing visitors to enjoy swimming in designated areas.
During the event, lifeguards and nurses are on duty, and simple changing rooms and temporary shower facilities are available. However, there are no beach houses or similar facilities, so please bring all necessary items yourself.

2. Odaiba Seaside Park (Tokyo)
For about 10 days from late July to early August, the 800-meter-long artificial beach at Odaiba Seaside Park, known as “Odaiba Beach,” hosts a sea bathing event called “Odaiba Plage.”
During the event, temporary showers and changing rooms are available, and tents and parasols can be rented. Additionally, water sports facilities are provided for children, making it ideal for families.

3. Inage Beach (Chiba)
Inage Beach, located in Chiba City’s Inage Seaside Park, is Japan’s first artificial beach. In summer, its 400-meter-long beach opens as a sea bathing area. The beach is covered with white sand imported from Australia, and there’s a café on a wooden boardwalk extending into the sea.
Nearby, the Inage Seaside Park Pool allows visitors to move between the beach and pool in swimwear. The pool features water slides and a wave pool, and visitors can use the pool’s showers and restrooms, making it a great complement to sea bathing.

4. Umi-no-Koen (Kanagawa)
Umi-no-Koen is the only park in Yokohama City where sea bathing is possible, typically open as a beach from the second Saturday of July to August 31. The water is shallow, lifeguards are on duty, and free showers and changing rooms are available at both the north and south ends of the beach.
The park also offers a barbecue area where no equipment is needed, making it perfect for combining with sea bathing. Tent rentals are available for a fee, recommended for hot weather.

5. Koshigoe Beach (Kanagawa)
Koshigoe Beach is a 3-minute walk from Enoshima Electric Railway’s Koshigoe Station and about a 10-minute walk from the Enoshima Line’s Katase-Enoshima Station. The 200-meter-long beach offers stunning views of Enoshima.
During the sea bathing season, only two beach houses operate, making it quieter than surrounding beaches, but public restrooms and free public showers are available, sufficient for sea bathing needs. In addition to the swimming area, there’s a softboard surfing zone, where beginners can enjoy surfing or bodyboarding.

6. Katase Higashihama Beach (Kanagawa)
Located next to Koshigoe Beach, Katase Higashihama Beach is Japan’s oldest sea bathing beach. The 560-meter-long beach has shallow waters and calm waves, making it ideal for families with children.
During the sea bathing season, about 20 beach houses operate, and each conducts morning and evening cleanups to maintain the beach’s scenery. There are no free showers or changing rooms, but they can be rented at beach houses (for a fee).

7. Katase Nishihama & Kugenuma Beach (Kanagawa)
Kugenuma Beach, located west of Katase Higashihama Beach across the Enoshima Bridge, is a highly popular 1-kilometer-long beach during summer.
A surfing mecca, it has stakes in the sea during the bathing season to separate swimming and surfing areas, ensuring safe sea bathing.
Kugenuma Beach has 27 beach houses, ranging from traditional styles to trendy café-like setups resembling resort destinations. Like Higashihama Beach, showers and changing rooms are available for rent at beach houses (for a fee).

8. Tsujido Beach (Kanagawa)
Tsujido Beach, slightly west of Katase Nishihama & Kugenuma Beach, is a smaller-scale beach. To the north lies Tsujido Seaside Park.
During the sea bathing season, only one beach house operates, but showers and changing rooms are available. With fewer visitors compared to nearby popular beaches, it’s a hidden gem.
Tsujido Beach is also a popular surfing spot, but swimming and surfing areas are separated, making it safe for families with children.
