What is the average annual income for each prefecture and region in Japan? The well-known Japanese job recruitment website Doda compiled average annual income data from approximately 600,000 people registered with the doda service between September 2023 and August 2024. The results provide rankings for each prefecture and the average annual income for seven regions (Kanto, Tokai, Kansai, Chugoku/Shikoku, Hokuriku/Shinetsu, Hokkaido/Tohoku, and Kyushu/Okinawa).
The prefecture with the highest average annual income is Tokyo (4.71 million yen), maintaining its top position from the previous year. In Tokyo, the average annual income for men is 5.34 million yen, and for women, it is 4.15 million yen, with both genders ranking the highest.
The top five prefectures are all located in the Kanto region: Kanagawa Prefecture in second place (4.52 million yen), Chiba Prefecture in third (4.35 million yen), Saitama Prefecture in fourth (4.26 million yen), and Ibaraki Prefecture in fifth (4.24 million yen). The average annual income for these five prefectures increased by more than 100,000 yen compared to the previous year.
The average annual income increased in 44 prefectures compared to the previous year, with the largest increases seen in Kanagawa Prefecture and Nagasaki Prefecture (3.86 million yen), both of which saw a rise of 170,000 yen from the previous year.
By region, the highest average annual income is in the Kanto region (4.51 million yen), followed by the Tokai region (4.13 million yen), Kansai region (4.07 million yen), Chugoku/Shikoku region (3.86 million yen), Hokuriku/Shinetsu region (3.85 million yen), Hokkaido/Tohoku region (3.81 million yen), and Kyushu/Okinawa region (3.80 million yen). Among these, the region with the largest increase in average annual income compared to the previous year is the Kanto region, with an increase of 150,000 yen.
