Shuchiin University's Review ①: Male / Faculty of Humanities, Buddhist Studies / Graduate / Entered in 2019

Overall Evaluation
It’s hard to say much because this is a religious department, but my impression is that there are many students and professors with philosophical minds. You should be aware that the student population is very small, and the atmosphere is not as lively, friendly, or enjoyable as at a teacher training university. There are people from the Shingon sect and other denominations. I don't wish to stir up sectarian conflicts, but if you want to live peacefully, be prepared for loneliness, as it can be a good place for study. Just focus on learning, nothing more. I’ve been searching for some typical student life experiences outside of the university.

Lectures/Classes
You can study esoteric Buddhism from beginner to expert level. I believe what sets it apart from other Buddhist universities is its inclusion of Tibetan and Sanskrit as subjects.

Labs/Seminars
Students participate in seminars selected by four professors. It’s a small group, so it can be very enjoyable if you have good friends with you. Depending on your professor, you may even be able to continue your studies at another university’s graduate school. The universities they introduce vary depending on your professor, so it’s crucial to gather information in advance if you aim for graduate school.

Employment/Promotion
As most people find work within their own school, I feel uncomfortable with the terms "employment" and "education." I believe this is unique to the Buddhist department.

Transportation/Location
From Kintetsu Okishima Station, you can clearly see the campus amidst vast rice fields, about a 5-8 minute walk from the station. The walk to school is a bit long, winding around the rice fields, so some students take shortcuts when they feel they might be late. The university is located in a picturesque area built on reclaimed land known as Ogura Pond, with only a few private homes and a distant visible highway overpass, aside from the neighboring Subaru High School. The main entrance of the university. From the classrooms on the northern side, you can see Fushimi Momoyama Castle. The nearest convenience store is inside the station. There's another convenience store on the opposite side of the station. As far as I know, there’s only one café/restaurant that doubles as a private residence, but students don’t frequent it.

Facilities/Equipment
You can study specialized courses in classrooms, which feature a large altar dedicated to the founder of the Shingon sect, Kobo Daishi. There is also a small, carpeted room for meditation and another for creating Buddhist art. I feel quite content with these facilities and have no complaints.

Friends/Romance
It’s hard to say that it’s fulfilling, given the small number of students. Each grade has about 10 students, with only one or two girls. If that girl is not your romantic interest, then there are no campus romances. You can make friends if you get along with everyone, but many people have strong personalities, so I feel that in order to get along with them, I have to empty myself out.

Student Life
I didn’t join any clubs, so I’m not very familiar with their activities. Typical events include a birthday party in June, a school festival in November, and a rewards gathering in December. There will also be a joint performance with the Biwako Gakuin at the local citizens’ hall Arti (tickets required). The school festival doesn’t attract many people, so there isn’t much to do, which is disappointing. Many students opt to take a leave instead of attending the university.

Shuchiin University's Review ②: Male / Faculty of Humanities, Buddhist Studies / Graduate / Entered in 2018

Overall Evaluation
I believe this is a very good university for students who want to study. It offers an excellent learning environment.

Lectures/Classes
I find it very rewarding. I think it’s easy to understand.

Labs/Seminars
Holding a detailed seminar on Buddhism would be very interesting.

Employment/Promotion
There isn’t much support for job hunting, but everyone tends to make similar career choices.

Transportation/Location
I think it’s fine, about a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Station.

Facilities/Equipment
Overall, I find it clean, and I think it’s easy to use and spend time there.

Friends/Romance
I don’t know much about it, as it’s a small university, but I think it’s okay.

Student Life
There are many circles (student groups), so I’m sure you’ll find one that suits you.

Shuchiin University's Review ③: Male / Faculty of Humanities, Social Welfare / Graduate / Entered in 2017

Overall Evaluation
Recommended by the Department of Social Welfare. Most people involved in Buddhism are children of temple families.

Lectures/Classes
Whether they meet expectations depends on the individual. I’d recommend it for those who want to pursue a career in caregiving.

Employment/Promotion
The support system is excellent. First of all, there aren’t enough people to provide caregiving, so it’s not a bad thing not to master it.

Transportation/Location
It’s very rural, surrounded by rice fields. There isn’t even a convenience store nearby. It’s quite far from the station.

Facilities/Equipment
I wouldn’t recommend the school cafeteria. The heating and cooling equipment is solid.

Friends/Romance
There are many girls, so unless you're a devoted fan, I think you’ll have fun.

Student Life
There are many circles, and if you're looking for one that aligns with your interests, you may find it.
