The research firm Counterpoint Research has unveiled the ranking of the best-selling smartphone models globally for the year 2023, with iPhones dominating positions 1 through 7, among which the iPhone 14 firmly secured the top spot.

The Top 10 Smartphones Collectively Hold A 20% Market Share

In 2023, the top 10 best-selling smartphones were all manufactured by Apple and Samsung, collectively commanding a 20% market share. This marks a 1% increase from the 19% market share held by the top 10 models in 2022.

Samsung devices ranking from 8th to 10th place are budget-friendly models that have garnered support from various customer demographics in many countries.


The Best-selling iPhone of 2023 was iPhone 14

Last year, the best-selling smartphone model globally was the iPhone 14, capturing 19% of iPhone sales in 2023. However, this figure is lower than the 28% share achieved by the iPhone 13 in 2022.

Looking specifically at the fourth quarter of 2023 (October to December), the newly launched iPhone 15 series dominated the global market, securing the top three positions. It's worth mentioning that among the iPhone 15 series, the most favored model was the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The Era of 4G mode is Coming to An End

The era of 4G mode is on the verge of conclusion. Among the top 10 best-selling smartphone models in 2023, 8 were 5G models, with only two, the Samsung Galaxy A04e and A14, being 4G models.

It is anticipated that all top ten smartphones this year will be 5G models, signaling the imminent end of the 4G smartphone era.

In Japan, the Best-selling Smartphone Was iPhone 13

BCN Ranking aggregated actual sales data from electronic retailers and online stores in Japan, revealing that the iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone in Japan from January to November 2023.

Apple secured the top position with a 57.4% share of vendor sales. Google followed with a 9.8% share, followed by Sharp (7.3%) and Sony (6.1%). Additionally, FCNT accounted for 2.8%, while Kyocera's share stood at 1.5%.

Analyzing by series, Apple dominated the top three positions. Starting from the first position, the rankings are as follows: "iPhone 13" (24.98%), "iPhone 14" (9.27%), and "iPhone SE (3rd generation)" (9.25%). The fourth and fifth positions were occupied by Google's "Pixel 6a" (4.85%) and "Pixel 7a" (3.44%), respectively.
