We recommend a winter sojourn to Hakone, exploring the captivating Hakone Shrine with its vermilion hues harmonizing with the pristine snow, the popular day-trip hot spring facility, Hakone Yuryo, and the Nicholas Bergman Hakone Garden, where you can admire scenic views amidst the Hakone Gardens, embellished with Christmas decorations. Below, we present the winter tourist attractions in Hakone.
1. Hakone Shrine(箱根神社)

Situated along the shores of Lake Ashi, the renowned Hakone Shrine is believed to be the guardian deity of the Kanto region. Established in the first year of Tenpyo-ji (757 AD), this shrine boasts a rich history and garnered reverence from Kanto warriors, including the likes of Minamoto no Yoritomo during the Kamakura period.
It is said that the shrine grants blessings such as wishes come true, good fortune, warding off evil, success in competition, and matchmaking. It attracts people from the political, business, and young female spheres.

Walking down the stone steps leading directly from the Main Shrine and continuing along the Yari-tate Sugi cedars, you reach Lake Ashi, where the iconic "Heiwa Torii" (Peace Torii) stands tall by the lakeside. In winter, the surrounding area is blanketed in white snow, creating a picturesque and reflective scenery. In recent years, this spot has gained popularity, so be sure to capture a photo as a memento of your winter visit to Hakone.

Throughout the year, various festivals are held, but the highly recommended one is the Setsubun Festival in February. At Lake Oni, after the demon extermination ritual called "Tsui-nashi," demons are chased away, riding on sleds across Lake Ashi! On the eve of the festival, fireworks are also set off, becoming a tradition of Hakone's winter festivities.
