International Visitors In Japan Has Exceeded The Figures From 2019 For Three Consecutive Months


The statistics released by the Japan Tourism Agency indicate that the total number of overnight travelers in November 2023 reached 53.56 million, reflecting a 16.9% increase compared to the same month last year and a 7.9% growth compared to November 2019. In comparison to November 2019, the number of overnight stays by Japanese nationals rose by 3.4% to 41.96 million, while foreign visitors' overnight stays increased by 28.0% to 11.60 million, marking the third consecutive month surpassing 2019 figures.

The room occupancy rate in November 2023 stood at 61.0%, showing a 4.6 percentage point decline compared to the same month in 2019. Tokyo Prefecture had the highest proportion at 78.6%. When categorized by facility type, hotels accounted for 41.8%, resort hotels for 55.9%, business hotels for 76.0%, city hotels for 76.2%, and budget accommodations for 26.1%.

In October 2023, the highest number of guests are from South Korea

In October 2023, the country with the highest number of guests was South Korea. The total number of overnight guests for October 2023 was 53.78 million, a 7.4% increase compared to the same month in 2019. Japanese guests' overnight stays numbered 41.52 million, up by 4.3%, while foreign guests' overnight stays reached 12.26 million, representing a 19.5% increase. Foreign guests constituted 22.8% of all guests.


The top three prefectures in terms of accommodation were Tokyo (9,112,330 stays, a 31.4% increase from October 2019), Osaka (4,708,450 stays, an 18.4% increase), and Hokkaido (3,139,030 stays, a 3.0% increase). Tokyo experienced the highest growth rate. In addition to Nagasaki Prefecture (20.1% increase), Tochigi Prefecture (20.1% increase), and Nagano Prefecture (15.4% increase), sales in the Kansai region, including Osaka Prefecture and Hyogo Prefecture (13.5% increase), and Kyoto Prefecture, also saw growth (12.8% increase).

Furthermore, in October 2023, among foreign guests categorized by place of birth, South Korea ranked first (1.352 million), followed by Taiwan (1.338 million), China (1.196 million), the United States (1.173 million), and Hong Kong (544,000). The top five countries/regions accounted for 55.8% of the total. In terms of growth compared to October 2019, South Korea showed the highest increase at 291.4%. Other countries with notable growth rates included Canada (79.8% increase), the United States (69.4% increase), Singapore (55.4% increase), and Spain (50.5% increase).
