List of Countries and Territories Where Japan is Visa-free


We are aware that the Japanese passport holds the top position globally for visa-free access, allowing its holders to visit the majority of countries and regions without a visa. Conversely, citizens from various countries around the world must adhere to specific visa policies when visiting Japan.

Citizens from 66 countries/regions can enjoy visa-free short-term stays in Japan:

Asia: Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, UAE
Europe: All EU citizens, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, Israel, Serbia, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, North Macedonia
Americas: Canada, United States, Mexico, Bahamas, Barbados, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Suriname, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay
Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
Africa: Tunisia, Mauritius, Lesotho

It's essential to note that this information is subject to change, and individuals should verify the current visa requirements before planning any travel to Japan.

Note 1: The visa-free stay duration for travelers from Brunei, Thailand, and Indonesia is 15 days, while for the UAE, it is 30 days. For all other countries and regions, it is 90 days. Passport holders from Austria, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom can apply to the Ministry of Justice to extend their stay, up to a maximum of 6 months.


Note 2: All foreign tourists visiting Japan for short stays must carry their passports and undergo photographing and fingerprinting upon entry.

Note 3: Visitors with short-term stay visas are prohibited from engaging in employment or paid activities during their time in Japan.

Visa-free Cruise Visits to Japan:

Since January 1, 2015, Japan has implemented a system for granting landing permission to cruise ships for sightseeing purposes. This system allows foreign tourists to enter Japan without a visa when stopping at designated Japanese ports on specific cruise ships. However, tourists must return to the cruise ship before it departs.
