Ishigaki Island, one of the outlying islands of Okinawa, is the central island of the Yaeyama archipelago. While you may have heard of Kabira Bay, one of Japan's most popular tourist spots, did you know that the city and its surrounding attractions are equally fascinating?
This time, we will provide first-time visitors to Ishigaki Island with essential information, must-visit tourist attractions, and hidden gems beloved by the locals!

【What Kind of Island is Ishigaki?】
Located approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Naha, the main island of Okinawa (a one-hour flight from Naha Airport), Ishigaki Island is the central island of the Yaeyama archipelago, second only to Iriomote.
Since the opening of the New Ishigaki Airport in 2013, the island has gained widespread attention and experienced a significant increase in the number of visitors, establishing itself as a new tourist destination with the addition of more resort hotels.
Charm of Ishigaki Island
With its crystal-clear emerald waters and ample opportunities to encounter manta rays, Ishigaki Island is renowned for attracting divers from all around the world.
If you venture into the outskirts by car, you can simultaneously enjoy the sea and mountains.
Ishigaki Island is also known as the "Island of Stars" and was certified as a "Starry Sky Preserve" by the International Dark-Sky Association in March 2018.

Climate and attire on Ishigaki Island:
Like other islands in Okinawa, Ishigaki Island has a subtropical oceanic climate, surrounded by the warm Kuroshio Current. The average annual temperature is approximately 24 degrees Celsius, creating a pleasant climate throughout the year.
Ishigaki Island experiences Japan's earliest summer and rainy season.
Around early June, the rainy season ends, and a strong southern wind ushers in the peak of summer.
Late summer to October is the typhoon season, but apart from that, the favorable climate continues.
Even in winter, it is possible to wear short sleeves for several days, but from late November, the temperature gradually drops, and it can get chilly at night. Therefore, it is recommended to bring a hoodie or a windbreaker.
【How to get to Ishigaki Island】
Domestic flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka directly fly to Ishigaki Island. Alternatively, you can fly to Naha, Okinawa, and then take a connecting flight or ferry to the island.
As the New Ishigaki Airport currently suspends international flights to and from Hong Kong and Taiwan, Chinese visitors must first travel to other parts of Japan before heading to Ishigaki Island.

Toujin Tomb - The Tale of Chinese Hardship History
Toujin Tomb is a grave that commemorates the spirit of Chinese workers. It was built to honor the 182 Chinese workers who were forced to labor and died in the Robert Bowne incident. The vibrant colors and exquisite carvings are remarkable!
Although it is a tomb, it has a solemn presence. The historical background can be understood from the inscriptions. Perhaps this intricately designed tomb represents the subtlety of Chinese culture.

Robert Bowne incident: According to the official Ryukyuan history book "Kyuyō," the Robert Bowne was an American ship used for forced labor. In the second year of Xianfeng (1852), the ship departed from Xiamen, Qing Dynasty, to California, USA, carrying 410 Chinese laborers. Captain Waley abused the Chinese laborers and forced them to cut off their braids. Unable to bear the humiliation, the laborers revolted when the ship arrived near Taiwan, killing the captain, first mate, and four sailors, taking control of the ship, and returning to Xiamen. They encountered headwinds along the way and drifted to Ishigaki Island in the Ryukyu Kingdom, where 380 Chinese laborers had to disembark. Some of the laborers died of illness, suicide, or went missing, and only 128 arrived in Fuzhou. The Chinese workers who died on Ishigaki Island were buried by local officials near Guanyin Cape, totaling more than 300, known collectively as the "Toujin Tomb." The Toujin Tomb was damaged during the Battle of Okinawa but was repaired in 1971 with contributions from the residents of Ishigaki Island and local overseas Chinese. The original pottery tombstone from the original burial is preserved at the Yaeyama Museum.
