Ukushima is located at the northern tip of the Goto Islands. Historically and geographically, it is often grouped with the Goto series, although administratively it belongs to the city of Sasebo. Sometimes it is also considered part of the Hirado Islands. What makes this island stand out are its lush green waters, golden sandy beaches, and vast grasslands that seem almost endless.
In ancient times, this island was called "Yukyu Island". It served as a stop for ships traveling between China and Korea, and even messengers from the Tang Dynasty once stopped here.
Today, Ukushima thrives on its primary industries, especially animal husbandry. Each year, approximately 1,100 calves, known as “Ukushi Beef,” are shipped across the country, making the island the proud birthplace of premium Wagyu.
🏝️ Ohama Beach
In the center of the island rises Shirogatake, nicknamed "Goto Fuji". Its 259-meter-high ridgeline is breathtaking. On clear days, the view extends to Iki, Tsushima, and Sasebo. Ohama Beach is another main attraction, its spectacular shoreline attracting swimmers, campers, and nature lovers year after year.
