People often assume that wages in urban areas with high living costs are higher than those in rural areas. Is this really the case? A recent nationwide wage survey in Japan sheds light on this.

Tokyo Leads with An Average of 370,500 Yen

The table is based on the results of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's "Basic Survey on Wage Structure for the Year 4 of Reiwa." It ranks the prefectures by wages (average amount) from highest to lowest, extracting the top 10. This encompasses averages for all age groups, industries, and both genders.

The national average wage in Japan is 311,800 yen, so only the top five prefectures exceed this level. The remaining 42 prefectures fall below the average.

Tokyo Also Ranks First in Income by Gender

The rankings for men and women are quite similar, with Tokyo taking the first spot, followed by Kanagawa and Osaka.

The 4th and 5th positions show slight variations, with Aichi ranking 5th for men and Nara Prefecture ranking 4th for women.

However, when comparing wages between men and women, male wages fall within the range of 330,000 to 410,000 yen, while female wages range from 250,000 to 310,000 yen, resulting in a difference of approximately 80,000 to 100,000 yen.

Furthermore, the national average wage for both men and women in Japan is 311,800 yen, nearly on par with the average wage for women in Tokyo, which ranks first. This implies that the majority of women's wages are below the national average for both genders in Japan.
