Japan’s Film Labo Vending Machine: Perfect iPhone Screen Protector in Just 2 Minutes

Japan has introduced a vending machine that can automatically put a screen protector on your phone. The brand behind it is Film Labo, and the idea is simple: even if you're not good at working with your hands, this machine ensures that your iPhone gets a perfectly aligned film without the stress of doing it yourself.

Currently, there are 28 Film Labo machines throughout Japan. One of them is located on the basement level of the Marui Department Store in Shinjuku, Tokyo – steps away from the Apple Store and subway entrance. This is a clever placement for those who want quick iPhone protection on the go.

Using the machine is straightforward. Tap the large green "Start" button on the screen to begin.

Keep in mind, Film Labo only works with iPhones. Since each model has different screen sizes and designs, you will need to select your exact model from the list that pops up after pressing "Start."

Once you've selected your phone, the system lets you choose from three types of screen protectors: high transparency, privacy filter (which blocks the side view), or anti-reflection. After that, a confirmation screen appears. Press "Yes" to proceed or "Back" if you want to change your choice.

No matter which iPhone or film type you choose, the price is set at 2,980 yen. The machine does not take cash, but it supports credit cards and several cashless payment options listed on the device.

After making the payment, hand over your phone to the machine. Be sure to remove your case first, and if you already have any old film, peel it off. There is also a slot on the front of the machine to recycle used screen protectors.

Place your phone on the tray, and the door closes automatically. This process takes about two minutes, including a quick cleanup step before playing the movie. When the door opens again, your phone looks flawless—no bubbles, no dust, no misalignments. It really feels like you've had a brand new screen replacement.

The only downside is the price. At 2,980 yen, it's not cheap. But that fee includes not only the service, but also the screen protector. Considering how frustrating a DIY application can be – hours wasted and still ending up with bubbles – Film Labo saves time and stress while providing a perfect finish.
